I've just returned from Cyprus after my first visit, and what an incredible journey it's been! Just three months ago, I had absolutely no idea that I was 25% Cypriot. Now I'm heading home, having met family members I never knew existed, learned more about my grandfather, and gained a whole new understanding of where I come from...

Discovering my family history through DNA has become a journey of identity, connection and belonging

Discovering my family history through DNA has become a journey of identity, connection and belonging"

It all started when I decided to explore my family history through DNA testing with Ancestry and MyHeritage. My mum was adopted, so there had always been a huge gap in our knowledge about her family. Thanks to modern technology, I've finally discovered who her father was.

His name was Markos Papouis, and he was Cypriot!

I've also made some fascinating connections on the Polish Jewish side of my family, but it's the Cypriot discoveries that have really taken me by surprise. Suddenly, a whole branch of my family tree has opened up, bringing with it people, places and stories I never imagined I'd find.

About a month ago, I was invited to Cyprus while my second cousin, Simon, was visiting. He introduced me to lots of other second cousins, who live in and around Dali near Nicosia, and the welcome I've received has been absolutely wonderful.

I've learnt so much about my grandfather, including when he came to England, where he lived and what sort of person he was. These are details I never thought I'd discover.

Growing up, I always felt I had quite a small family. We knew very little about my mum's side, and although I had cousins Margaret and Penny on my dad's side, I never really got to know many relatives. I didn't grow up knowing my grandparents either, as my grandfather died when I was just six months old.

As the years fly by, I've realised how important it is to ask questions and explore these connections while we still can. I especially want my boys to have access to their family history, so if they ever become curious about where they come from, the information and stories will be waiting for them.

This experience has reminded me that it's never too late to discover something extraordinary about yourself. Sometimes, taking that first step opens doors you didn't even know existed!

I'd love to know: have you ever discovered something surprising about your family history through DNA testing or genealogy?

I'd love to hear your own stories.

Until next time ...

About Davina Farrer ...

Davina Farrer

I’ve always believed life is too short to sit still and wait for “someday.” From travelling the world in my twenties to taking on challenges like long-distance coastal walks, I’ve built a life around adventure, freedom, and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.

After becoming a mum, I wanted a way to be present for my family while still creating an income and future for myself. That led me to build a flexible, residual income business that fits around real life - not the other way round. Today, I help others do the same, showing them how to reduce their bills and create more choice with their time.

For me, it’s not just about money - it’s about freedom. Freedom to travel, take on new challenges, and be there for the moments that matter most. If you’re looking for a way to create more flexibility, more income, and more life in your days, you’re in the right place.
