There is something exciting about mastering a new skill. Whether it is for work, personal development, or simply for fun, every new challenge starts with that slightly awkward beginner stage where nothing quite goes to plan ...

Mastering a new skill takes time and dedication, but every expert knows that starting as a beginner is the first step

Mastering a new skill takes time and dedication, but every expert knows that starting as a beginner is the first step

That certainly described my latest stand-up paddle boarding adventure. It was only my third or fourth time on the board and, to make matters worse, I managed to fasten my life jacket incorrectly before I even got on the water. With a strong wind pushing me around, it wasn't long before I found myself taking an unexpected dip.

It was a reminder that learning anything new comes with a few
splashes, stumbles and plenty of laughter along the way!

The experience made me think about what it really takes when mastering a new skill. Whether you want to progress in your career, learn to play the piano or develop a new hobby, improvement only comes from investing time and effort.

We've all heard the idea that it takes around 10,000 hours to become an expert. While the exact number is open to debate, the principle remains true, though; consistency beats talent when talent doesn't keep practising.

Will stand-up paddle boarding be the thing I dedicate thousands of hours to? Probably not. I would simply like to become confident enough to enjoy it whenever the opportunity comes along. There are plenty of other goals that I'm much more determined to pursue.

Someone recently shared an idea with me that every couple of years you should choose one new skill and commit to becoming really good at it. I love that approach. Sometimes I move on from things too quickly, while other times I'm like a dog with a bone and refuse to give up until I've cracked it.

This year's challenge is mastering video editing for social media, especially TikTok. It's a skill that will support my business, allow me to be more creative and open up new opportunities. Mastering a new skill isn't about becoming perfect overnight.

It's about choosing what matters most, putting in the time and enjoying the journey. So if you notice my videos getting sharper, slicker and more creative over the coming months, you'll know exactly what I've been practising.

Watch this space!

Until next time ...

About Davina Farrer ...

Davina Farrer

I’ve always believed life is too short to sit still and wait for “someday.” From travelling the world in my twenties to taking on challenges like long-distance coastal walks, I’ve built a life around adventure, freedom, and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.

After becoming a mum, I wanted a way to be present for my family while still creating an income and future for myself. That led me to build a flexible, residual income business that fits around real life - not the other way round. Today, I help others do the same, showing them how to reduce their bills and create more choice with their time.

For me, it’s not just about money - it’s about freedom. Freedom to travel, take on new challenges, and be there for the moments that matter most. If you’re looking for a way to create more flexibility, more income, and more life in your days, you’re in the right place.
